ABHA Architects partnered with Archmere Academy to reimagine its 700-seat Performing Arts Center—an essential hub for school life, hosting theatrical productions, concerts, liturgies, and milestone ceremonies. Originally constructed in the mid-20th century, the facility no longer met the Academy’s needs for accessibility, comfort, and performance technology.
The design challenge was twofold: preserve the character and central role of the theater while modernizing every aspect of the audience and performer experience. Our team addressed this by:
Accessibility & Seating: Reconfiguring the auditorium floor and aisles to create ADA-compliant seating locations and sightlines without sacrificing capacity.
Audience Experience: Expanding and renovating the lobby, restrooms, and circulation areas to enhance comfort and accommodate large gatherings.
Performance Support: Upgrading backstage areas with new green room and dressing facilities, and re-planning band and choral rooms for acoustical quality and efficient flow between rehearsal and stage.
Systems & Safety: Integrating new HVAC, fire suppression, and life-safety systems seamlessly into the historic envelope.
Visual Identity: Renewing interior finishes, lighting, and an on-site art gallery to elevate the aesthetic presence of the space in line with the Academy’s mission.
Construction sequencing was carefully planned to minimize disruption to campus life. The project was completed on a tight timeline—beginning after Commencement and culminating in a rededication within the academic year.
The result is the Rocco A. and Mary Abessinio Performing Arts Center: a modern, flexible, and welcoming venue that celebrates the arts while continuing to serve as Archmere’s gathering place for generations to come.
