The new 17,280 square foot Northern Resource Center for the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council sits at the high point of a seven acre wooden lot surrounded by trees and streams that are used for on-site outdoor STEM education programs. The building serves over 11,000 Girl Scouts and over 4,000 adult members of the Chesapeake Bay Council on the Delmarva Peninsula. Its design is organized around a circular stone-clad lobby and gathering space, which reinforces the facility’s theme, “A Beacon for All Girls,” that was established early in design. Two wings reach out from this central hub and include a multi-purpose room, administrative offices, space for meetings, a retail shop, and exhibit area. A rear patio provides informal gathering space. Extensive use of daylighting, LED lighting, lighting controls and variable refrigerant flow mechanical systems emphasize the client’s desire for energy conservation and sustainable design. The design-build project also incorporates sustainable stormwater management strategies to address a sensitive site restricted in development by wetlands and young and mature forests.
