In the fall of 2009, the design by ABHA Architects was selected for the Appoquinimink School District's masterplan for four new schools on a 272-acre campus in Odessa, Delaware. The plan is organized around a central "Green," which is surrounded by the elementary, middle and high schools, while the early childhood center is set closer to the adjacent suburban neighborhood.
The tree-lined entrance leads to a traffic circle that connects the inner and outer loops around the site. The outer loop serves buses, staff and students, while the inner loop is dedicated to visitors and parent drop-off. The green is a common space for all the schools, with potential uses ranging from athletics and marching band practice to community fairs. A stand-alone Aquatics Center provides space for District swim meets and community swim clubs and a proposed Environmental Education Center, located at the edge of the wetlands, provides classroom and lab space.
Like the roots it draws from, the masterplan ultimately strives to make the campus a place rather than a collection of buildings. The masterplan is a blueprint for the Appoquinimink School District's vision of the future, and an encouraging outlook for education.
