The Christiana Donor Center expansion became necessary to keep pace with technological advances in blood banking and the rising demand for blood needed by those who rely on transfusions. The building nearly doubled in size with a new spacious state-of-the-art blood donor center as its focal point. The existing facility was also renovated with four new sections added. The additional space allowed reconfiguration of work groups to improve efficiency and expand capacity without a shutdown of this critical health care operation. The new entrance directs blood donors to a waiting area and donations stations flooded with natural light and views to the exterior. The new addition surround the existing building, allowing expansion of individual departments in a phased construction project without interruption of service. The new layout minimizes the movement of donors throughout the donation experience and improves the flow of blood products from procession to distribution. The use of materials and forms of the addition compliment the original building, resulting in a single, unified identity for the facility.
