This 840-student elementary school includes 35 classrooms serving Grades 1-5. Classrooms are organized by grade level around five commons, which include computer stations, instructional space, “story steps” and a work room. Each classroom shares a breakout space with the adjacent classroom, with sliding “barn doors” to accommodate a variety of activities. Daylighting and clerestory windows provide an outdoor connection for the teaching spaces and minimize reliance on artificial light. The interior of the building is themed around the natural environment of the site, including decorative dried grass translucent panels throughout the building, and decorative, marsh habitat, inlays in the library shelving. The exterior of the building recalls the architectural style of historic Odessa, and sets the design aesthetic for future development of the site’s future middle and high schools. The Elementary School is located adjacent to the formal “Green” that is the hub of the campus master plan, which will be anchored by the future high school.
